The History of Art: A Clown Show

Charee Monroy

To find her misplaced inspiration, a clown rummages through time & art movements, exploring where inspiration comes from, where it went & why art moves us in weird, wonderful ways. Making things is never easy, but when done with a little mischief and help from your friends (or audience members) the clown discovers why people keep making art no matter the time, place, or circumstance.

A mashup of visual art and clown, this show was recently developed and performed in the Scene + Heard New Works Festival 2026 at Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin. Through vignettes of different artists’ lives and work, the show explores the history of visual art spanning the prehistoric to post-modern movements using clown, props, puppets and art. This show is for anyone who’s ever been brave enough to pick up a paintbrush, a knitting needle, or chisel.
